INTRODUCTION

​

          When a decentralized system of government began to be developed in Indonesia through decentralization, city and county governments held most strategic role in the management of the city. Increasingly complex city problems such as social, economic, cultural and physical, are demanding a more comprehensive solution concept. One of the concepts that are considered relevant as a solution to the complexity of urban problems today is the idea of ​​a friendly city. Friendly city is an ideal picture of a city that every life of people well-accommodated, comfortable and fair in city spaces. The background of the election is because the pedestrian is a city level that contact with people daily but still has not received serious attention.

          A forum for discussion of the friendly city has ever seminar on the International Seminar 1st Friendly City: Towards a Friendly City, as part of One Decade Anniversary of Architecture at the University of Sumatera Utara November 2001; International Seminar 2nd Friendly City: Urban Development Management for Friendly City in 2003; and International Seminar 3rd Friendly City: Friendly City for Urban Tourism in 2011. As a continuation of the seminar, Architecture Graduate Program Master Degree USU cooperate with the government of Medan intends to organize International Seminar on Friendly City: From Research to Implementation for Better Sustainability. The seminar aims to collect a variety of positive thoughts about the management of developing friendly city, especially to apply the concept to the real problems of urban in various parts of the world today. For that much needed donations thoughts and experiences of practitioners of government that will be combined with conceptual theories by experts. Thus it is expected will be obtained a more comprehensive and applicable problem-solving framework.

 

 

GENERAL PURPOSE

1. As a media for research results and experience exchange in exploring and developing ideas of friendly city in various aspects and perspectives.

2. For media synchronization between academic research and practical application in solving urban problems, particularly in Indonesia and developing countries.

          Medan city is the capital of North Sumatera Province in Indonesia. Medan city is third largest city in Indonesia behind Jakarta and Surabaya. The city is bordered by The Deli Serdang Regency to the east, south and west and the Strait of Malacca to the north. This city consist of 21 districts or municipalities. Medan features a tropical rainsforest climate with temperature average approximatey 27 degree Celcius throughout the course of the year.

          Medan is well-connected by road, air, rail and sea. There are plenty of options for public transport within city and intercity. Medan city can reached by air throught Kualanamu International Airport (KNO). The airport has airport train or Airport Railink Services (ARS) connects the airport to city center. Medan city has an unique transportation its called the motorized rickshaw or Becak Motor (Bentor). The driver of becak motor sits on the right side of the rickshaw. There are also more public transport like taxis and minibuses, known as Sudako or Angkutan Kota (Angkot). The angkot can be found easily in medium-to-high congested road and the angkots always use number as route. TransMebidang is a new bus rapid transit system in North Sumatra, Indonesia that has 2 active corridors.

          There are many old building in Medan with Dutch architecture. Some old buildings located around the old town Kesawan, they are: City Hall, Medan Post Office, Inna Dharma Deli Hotel, Titi Gantung (a bridge over the railway), The London Sumatera building and Tjong A Fie Mansion. The other old buildings are the Tirtanadi Water Tower, Maimoon Palace, Great Mosque of Medan, Vihara Gunung Timur, Sri Mariamman Temple, etc. Medan city also has two state university namely, University of Sumatera Utara (USU) and University State of Medan (Unimed).

          Medan city has a lot of culinary spots that provides Indonesian food and traditional Medan food , namely, Merdeka Walk, Amaliun food court, Pandu street, Tip Top Restaurant, Selat Panjang street, Ria ice cream, Ucok Durian, etc. Medan is very popular with its exceptional cuisine such as soto Medan, mie rebus, bika ambon, durian pancake, roll cake, passion fruit (markisa) sirup and tamarillo (terong belanda) syrup.
